WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

Throughout the course we emphasize the significance of movement for pain relief, falls prevention, and overall well-being, with a focus on safety and collaboration with care professionals. From class setup and avoiding pitfalls to incorporating mindfulness and meditation, this course navigates you through instructing tailored movement classes. It offers practical advice for adapting exercises for various body parts and includes core exercises.

With examples, resources, and an emphasis on building a supportive class environment, this course is your comprehensive guide to promoting movement, health, and well-being among care home residents.

NOTE: In this course, we use “movement” instead of “yoga” for inclusivity and adaptability.
“Movement” encompasses a wider range of activities that go beyond traditional yoga poses,
making it more accessible for individuals in care home settings. This approach allows for a
flexible, person-centered teaching style, considering diverse physical abilities.

We use “shape” instead of “pose” to emphasise the dynamic nature of exercises, eliminating
rigid expectations. By focusing on shaping the body through movement, we tailor sessions for strength, flexibility, balance, and posture, ensuring a holistic and personalized approach for care home residents.

METHODOLOGY

The Movement for Ordinary OLDER People course is housed on the Ordinary People Academy’s Online Studio.

The training is a mixture of:

  • pre-recorded videos and audios that you can access at any time
  • required reading which includes classical and contemporary books and a comprehensive manual
  • filling in a Learner Achievement Portfolio (including creating your own set of class plans)
  • taking part in the private teaching/coaching calls as well as practice teaching in between calls

Yoga was originally transmitted from teacher to student in a rich personal relationship (the gurukula system) and Joseph Pilates trained his Elders on a bespoke basis. This one-to-one mentorship will guide you in the traditional way using modern means of communication (Zoom and WhatsApp).

This course might be online but that doesn’t mean any drop in quality. In fact, this is an intimate and intelligent teacher training where I will be working with you on a 1:1 basis to help you become an embodied LEADER and not just a teacher.

When you sign up to the training you will receive a “care parcel” from me which gives you something tangible to go along with the ephemeral.
