BREATHWORK

FACILITATOR TRAINING

  • The first thing to know about our facilitator training is this is not a yoga course. And it’s open to anyone who has an interest in working with clients (1:1 or groups) to help support and heal trauma.
  • You don’t need equipment and large amounts of money to get going. You learn the tools and then you and your clients start to feel better fast.
  • Breathwork is one of the most cutting edge and impactful ways to support people. And it doesn’t take as long as Yoga or Pilates teacher training either.
  • I teach a variety of breathwork styles to support all clients. This is not a one-size-fits-all training.
  • This is a six-month, doubly-accredited, 200-hour training to certify you as a breathwork facilitator.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN ON THIS COURSE:

This CIMSPA endorsed and IPHM accredited qualification teaches the skills, knowledge and competence required of an individual in order to work with clients on specific breathing techniques in both 1:1 or group sessions.

Learners will cover:

The anatomy of the lungs; gaseous exchange; the breath-brain connection and the physical and mental benefits of breathwork.
How to hold space for breathwork; creating a trauma-informed space and basic facilitation skills.
How the breath impacts the vagus nerve and its connection to the parasympathetic nervous system.
The structure of a breathwork session and how to build momentum with music and motivational cueing (i.e.what to say and what to play).
The content of a breathwork session with an in-depth study of 6 unique breathwork exercises.
Advanced Facilitation skills – How to plan for emotional and physical reactions; how to modify for different audiences/special populations.

Listen, I didn’t know how to breathe. That’s what started the whole thing.

I’d been practicing yoga since I was 13, but I didn’t realise I was holding my breath, losing my centre, until 20 years later.

Crazy, right?

People tend to misinterpret the importance of breath. They don’t understand it’s the beginning of everything, especially healing.

If you’re not breathing, you’re not present. Your mind is spinning out somewhere else. You’re not getting the benefit of the work you’re trying to do to de-stress.

I figured it out when I read A Life Worth Breathing, by Max Strom. It inspired me so much, I tracked him down and took his advanced teacher training. Then I ran with it. That was 15 years ago.

I’ve been teaching yoga for 23 years, Pilates for 18 years and meditation for over a decade. To me, these are the tools to support healing from all sorts of trauma: emotional, physical, and mental. They are gentle and easy to implement.

And that’s what I wanted for myself.

Movement and play were responsible for my mental health in Northern Ireland, starting at a very young age. I saw no reason to stop as an adult.

As the world wakes up to the potential of these modalities, I’m thrilled to be able to offer breathwork facilitator training to you.

WHAT MAKES THIS COURSE DIFFERENT:

We cover a range of high and low oxygen techniques rather than focusing on one specific method of breathing.
We cover both spiritual and scientific breath practices, making the training suitable for PTs and Fitness Instructors as well as Yoga Teachers and Pilates Instructors.
We cover the WHY as well as the HOW of breathwork so that you can fill your classes by promoting the benefits of this life-changing work.
We break down complex physiology, particularly around the vagus nerve and the impact of breathwork on the nervous system.
We provide tools for your own personal transformation and the confidence to incorporate these tools into your existing classes (or to create an entirely new class).

Will I be just another face in the crowd?

Absolutely not! At the Ordinary People Academy we pride ourselves on our high-touch, low-number courses. We cap the Breathwork training at 12 people so you get plenty of individual attention from the course creator Victoria and the other faculty members. You also get lots of opportunity to practice with each other in peer-to-peer calls and with your accountability buddy so you’re never on your own.

What are the course dates?

The course starts with a training call on Tuesday 17th Sept 2024 @ 7 pm – 9 pm UK-time (2 pm – 4 pm EST).

The course ends with an assessment call on Tuesday 1st April 2025 @ 7 pm – 9 pm UK-time (2 pm – 4 pm EST).

This is a 6-month course with peer-to-peer  and public calls in between the training calls, giving plenty of time to practice before final assessment.

How many hours a week is this training?

 Approximately 2 – 3 hours a week which includes:

  • Monthly 2-hour live webinar with Victoria or another faculty member
  • Monthly 2-hour peer-to-peer call
  • Monthly 1-hour practice call with the public (Breathwork for Ordinary People session)
  • 10 – 30 minutes of practice per day
  • 30 minutes to journal after daily practice
Do I have to do that hyperventilation breathing I've been hearing about?

This is Breathwork for Ordinary People so we DO cover conscious connected breathing (which I assume is what you’re referring to) but we also cover a range of other breathwork techniques that are both activating and calming and can be added to your toolbox so you can work with everyone.

Yes! The course is endorsed by CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport & Physical Activity) with 10 CPD points. It is also accredited by IPHM (International Practitioners of Holistic Medicine). Both will allow you to become a Member and get professional recognition and discounted insurance.

The call was sooo uplifting… It was a beautiful space to be held and you were knowledgeable with lots of connections.

    Lynne

Victoria is such an engaging mentor, she is like hanging out with a friend you haven’t seen for a little while, so supportive in so many ways and goes over and above to look after you. The course was perfectly laid out, really easy to follow and is there constantly to easily refer to which is well used by us all!  If you are curious, go for it, you won’t regret it!

    Simone

I have felt so alone for the last 2 weeks, googling till the cows come home and your honesty and vulnerability in those few minutes just helped me more than you will ever know … thank you.

    Alison

This breathwork facilitator course has provided so much knowledge, but most invaluable to me has been the opportunity to gain confidence in facilitation through practicing. I’ve gone from being full of imposter syndrome to feeling at ease adding my own flavour and intuition to facilitation. In fact, I loved it so much I’ve become a Tutor on the course!

    Kellan

This was a fantastic course. Victoria knows how to cultivate a safe space for learning the different types of breathwork. She’s very encouraging and motivating and has a great amount of knowledge and experience both in practice and in teaching. I’d recommend to anyone who wanted to become accredited in breathwork and work in the area in a safe and respectful way.

    MEET THE TEAM

I’m Victoria, the visionary behind the  Ordinary People Academy. With a wealth of experience and expertise in wellness, I am dedicated to empowering others to succeed in their wellness businesses while balancing the joys of motherhood.

I am not only a wellness guru but also a loving mom to Alisdair, aged 3 years, and balancing the demands of entrepreneurship with the chaotic joys of motherhood.

I have an MA Honours degree in English Literature & Sociology; an MSc in Marketing and various Certificates and Diplomas in youth and community work, training, and facilitation skills.

I founded award-winning charity Stretch & Play in 2006 and developed Stretch NI in 2009, focusing on working with adults. I moved to Scotland in 2012 and expanded work into teacher training courses with StretchBodyMind (now the Ordinary People Academy).

I have over 30 years of yoga practice and two decades of teaching experience. I have been a Pilates instructor since 2006 and a Yoga Alliance Professionals Senior Yoga Teacher since 2012 and, through my high touch small group and 1:1 courses, I have personally trained hundreds of Yoga and Pilates professionals.

My dedication, expertise, and nurturing spirit have transformed countless lives, and my commitment to excellence continues to inspire wellness professionals worldwide.

It’s my most sincere hope that we blanket the world with breathwork. We have enough medication and talk therapy already.

Hi, I’m Kellan – a transmasculine, neurodivergent, trans-racial adoptee. (My pronouns are they/them).

I’m an OPAs breathwork facilitator training graduate, a trauma-informed coach, and a somatic therapist with a nutrition and lifestyle medicine postgraduate degree. I work predominantly with fellow queer folks and adoptees through my work at Kai Ming Holistics. I consider myself a ‘guide’ on people’s journeys and resonate with an intuitive approach to body-orientated nervous system regulation and somatic processing.

My journey with breathwork began with seeking a way to heal from COVID-19 fatigue. Breathwork quickly led me on a path of recovery from both fatigue and early developmental trauma I had previously thought ‘unhelpable’ and onto other somatic modalities!

I believe there is a vast amount of innate healing wisdom inside us all; it’s always communicating with us.

When we cultivate an environment where our bodies feel safe and supported, this wisdom can come forth.

I’m excited to be a part of the OPA faculty and facilitate more spaces to nourish, heal, and grow together!

I’m Lynne, the dynamic COO of the Ordinary People Academy.

Since meeting Victoria in 2015, I have been a steadfast supporter and friend, contributing significantly to the academy’s mission both behind the scenes and as an instructor.

By day, I am a registered nurse at a GP surgery, specializing in diabetes and women’s health. My dedication to Lifestyle Medicine fuels my passion for holistic well-being.

But my expertise doesn’t stop there! As a senior yoga teacher, I am devoted to helping our community maintain ease of movement and improve self-care practices as they age. Additionally, I am a skilled breathwork facilitator, guiding you to unlock profound levels of relaxation.

I would also describe myself as a wellness warrior, actively overcoming Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. On my own social media channels I share my journey and insights to help you lead a healthier, happier life through Health Coaching and Lifestyle Medicine.

I am thrilled to be part of the faculty for the Breathwork Facilitator Training course and teaching breathwork for special populations.
